10 things you should know about stockings
You are about to go to the office toast, you have a very important dinner, or you go out to meet your boy… and, bang! You realize that the stocking has gone. This is one of the typical problems that women face when it comes to wearing stockings or pantyhose.
To prevent this from happening to you, at ActitudFem we have prepared a guide with 10 tips to take care of your stockings and prevent future incidents.
Learn this acronym: DEN. This is short for deniers, a measurement that establishes the thickness of the stocking yarn. The smaller the number, the thinner and more transparent media (15, 20, 40…). From 60 den the socks are thicker, opaque and resistant.
Duration and good condition. These two variables have a lot to do with misuse. You may not be putting on your pantyhose correctly. You have to try to do it without pulls, gently, without wearing rings or watches. Once placed, you have to be careful with tables and chairs because they tend to get caught on them.
Hand wash. Stockings up to 40 den are the most delicate. It is best to wash them by hand, with a mild detergent. Calzedonia experts advise that the water is not too hot, as it could ruin the elasticity of the tights. Nor should they be twisted or rubbed too much.
Some can go to the washing machine. For stockings from 40 den onwards, almost all the washing machines on the market incorporate a special cycle for this type of delicate garments, with a gentle spin. According to the manufacturers of ETAM, “if they are 100% polyester / nylon there is no problem in washing them in the washing machine, in a laundry bag, in a delicate laundry program, with cold water and very little fabric softener. The softener is the greatest enemy of elastic and synthetic fibers ”.
Always use a laundry bag. It is best to always put them in a washing bag or "washbag", but be of good quality. A bad bag, warns from the prestigious company Woldford, "not only can make the washing poor, it can also cause a bad rinse leaving Soap residues on our tights or, worse, snags or tears due to a bad closure. ”Even inside the bag, wash them inside out if they contain natural fibers such as cashmere, wool or mohair, to avoid chafing.
How to dry them. They should be kept far, far away from the dryer, or from any other direct source of heat. Wolford experts explain that lycra or elastane is rubber, which deforms under direct heat. “As an exception, we could dry them on the radiator, but always on a towel. We can also lay them out, but we must always remove excess moisture beforehand and thus prevent the passage of water from deforming them ”, they add. If you spread them, try not to put tweezers on them, to avoid marks or deformations.
Always read the packaging. The manufacturer's recommendations for washing, drying and conservation are explained on all packages. Then you decide whether to follow them or not.
How to save them. The important thing when storing them is to prevent them from rubbing or catching with other garments that contain velcro, zippers, rhinestones, sequins or hooks that can deteriorate them, the manufacturers advise. They also recommend not storing them in bags, to prevent them from perspiring, and folding them as they are sold, in a maximum of 3 or 4 folds, especially the thinnest socks.
What to do if they run. When this happens sooner or later you will have to get rid of them. However, the emergency nail polish solution has worked for decades and it doesn't have to keep working.
How long do stockings or pantyhose last? It depends on the type of material, of course its thickness (the thinner ones last less) and the use made of them. The resistance varies, but some manufacturers dare to calculate that, based on quality averages, the fine ones have a half-life of 10 positions, the intermediate ones (20den) of 20 positions and those of 60den onwards "the strips due to boredom" . If you decide to continue using them because you are fond of them or you like the color, we suggest you put them on the other way around, with the ugliest part inside, in contact with the skin.
