The judge specifically highlighted that neither the 2022 docuseries "Harry & Meghan" nor the March 2021 CBS interview with Meghan and Prince Harry contained any instances of defamation. The couple's comments against Samantha and Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle, were deemed by the court to be "quintessential examples of opinion."
"We express our satisfaction with the Court's decision to dismiss this lawsuit," Michael J. Kump, Meghan's attorney, said. In March 2022, Samantha filed a lawsuit against Meghan, alleging misrepresentation of their relationship and falsehoods about living in "virtual poverty." Samantha sought compensation for damages, including lost employment, lost income from her autobiography sales, emotional distress, and harm to her reputation, exceeding $75,000.
Meghan responded by filing a motion to dismiss the suit, deeming Samantha's claims "meritless." In the filing, Meghan argued that the court should not be involved in determining the legitimacy of feelings about childhood and relationships.
"This dispute has no place in this Court or any other," stated the June 2022 filing.
In the end, Meghan prevailed in the lawsuit, providing a significant legal victory for her in the ongoing legal battles with her half-sister.
