Hundreds of Americans firmly believe that the country should not amend its laws to honor a foreign prince. Under US law, anyone seeking US citizenship is required to renounce all allegiance to a foreign prince. If the country were to modify its laws, Prince Harry could retain his title. Nonetheless, a recent poll commissioned by Newsweek revealed that a significant majority of thousands of Americans oppose such a change. Pollsters Redfield and Wilton, who conducted the survey among 1,500 American adults, found that 44% (528 people) opposed the idea, while nearly half of the respondents were against it. Only 23% of the sample (276 people) expressed support for legislative changes that would allow Prince Harry to retain his title, and 32% (384 people) remained unsure about whether the law should be modified.
Legal experts believe that there might be a legal pathway for Prince Harry to keep his title while becoming a US citizen. Alfons Provinciano, a partner at the American law firm Provinciano and Associates, suggested in an interview with the Daily Mirror that Prince Harry could challenge the Supreme Court. Provinciano stated that Prince Harry could argue that the law requiring his renunciation of the title violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, an unresolved aspect of US law.
