The bra is intended to protect and support the tissue. Is it really like that? We clear up common medical myths.

The breasts should be firm, plump and firm. To keep it that way, many women put on the bra. It is intended to protect and support the connective tissue and prevent the sagging breast. Does it work? Does the bra really protect against gravity or does it even do the opposite? We got to the bottom of it.

Would you prefer a bra instead of a sagging breast?

  • Many women suffer from the marks left by the straps on the shoulders or on the back. If the bra does not fit well, it triggers back pain. The bra constricts, it rarely feels like a second skin. And then this feeling when a woman can finally take off her bra as soon as she is at home. Pure freedom! It is precisely this feeling that is causing more and more women to join the no-bra movement and to leave the bra outside of their own four walls. Those who do not feel "naked", do not like the natural shape of their breasts - or fear the sagging breasts. Right?

Studies continue to make headlines, such as that of the French sports doctor Jean-Denis Rouillon, who wanted to study the effects of the bra on female tissue for 15 years. The professor at the Université de Franche-Comté is said to have found out after three months that the breasts became tighter in 50 subjects between the ages of 18 and 35 who did not wear a bra. This also reduced the ratio between the height of the nipples and the shoulders by seven millimeters per year.
Japanese researchers came to a similar conclusion in the 1990s and investigated the effects of wearing a bra. The result: the tissue would quickly get used to the support and relax.
However, no study is representative: The Frenchman soon rowed back and remarked that the small number of study participants would not be representative results. Long-term knowledge is also missing. In Japan, only eleven women were examined, so there can be no question of a representative study here either.
As long as relevant studies are missing, the only thing that remains is whether wearing or leaving out a bra causes a sagging breast is as individual as any woman. It depends on the fabric and women should rely on their feelings. Do you feel better with or without? And the bra hurts - away with it.

Many don't even do without at night
Women love or hate the bra. Surprising: Many women do not want to do without it even when they are sleeping. At night, however, the rule is: topless! Doctors point out that wearing the bra at night can lead to bruising of the lymph nodes, circulatory disorders and subsequently cyst formation.

Women with large bust sizes, on the other hand, offer a bra at night and feel more comfortable. Then it should definitely be a non-iron, loose-fitting model made of pure cotton.

When the bra really supports
But the bra is not just bad. Because:

  • Things are different with sports. Anyone who moves, runs or jumps a lot should definitely wear a sports bra. With every movement, the connective tissue slackens and the hanging bushes are pre-programmed.
  • Women with overweight or large and heavy breasts should also put on the bra as a support. A well-fitting bra not only protects the tissue, but also prevents back pain and bad posture.
  • A bra is also recommended during pregnancy because the tissue changes constantly during this time. It is worth investing in a matching bra more often.
  • During breastfeeding, the bra not only protects the tissue, but also keeps nursing pads in place.

Conclusion: At the moment it is not possible to say whether a bra favors a sagging breast or not. So it is up to each woman how she feels more comfortable. However, you should not do without it when exercising or under other circumstances.
