Dressing in black: instructions for not doing it in a boring way!

Sometimes, especially if you are curvy and plus size, wearing black is interpreted as the absence of "courage" or imagination, a way to hide or, more benevolently, to "wear out" an important body. And maybe for many it is like this, an obligatory or immediate choice, "comfortable" (forgive the abundance of quotes). For me, on the other hand, black is a conscious choice because it is an elegant, chic color that adds charm ... it is a lifestyle in which size does not matter much.

How to wear black without being trivial

Black is a bit of a refuge color for everyone. When you don't know what to wear, when you want to be elegant and feel "right" it's black that you turn confidently to, and you rarely go wrong. Only risk? Being banal, boring, mournful, without personality. Or worse, sloppy.

Yes, sloppy. Because black is a treacherous color: it makes you believe you are a simple color and instead a nothing is enough to lose all the poetry:

1-Black is beautiful as long as it is full and bright, it doesn't have to be faded. When the washes have left their mark, you need to be able to say goodbye even if it's our favorite garment.

2-Beware of too cheap fabrics. I'm not saying that you only need to take cashmere and silk (even if it would be very nice) but some synthetic fabrics and polishes show even more their littleness when they are black.

3-Be careful to combine different blacks. Often the black color has an undertone that can turn to blue or gray, to red, to purple ... With the naked eye, it may not be noticed but it is enough to combine two blacks with different undertones to realize the difference.

Once these simple rules are established, let's see how it is possible to dress in black in a neat and personal way, so that no one looking at us thinks that we are in one of those days I have nothing to wear.

Black and leather, black and camel

One of my favorite combinations is total black combined with a leather or camel-colored detail. It doesn't take much: a belt, shoes, a bag, a scarf, but also a more important item such as a jacket or a nice sweater. A practically perfect wedding.

Black and spotted

It is an alternative to the same color palette of the camel color. The leopard print stands out and adds a lot of personality to the black. Leopard print is not always aggressive or rock, used in small doses on classic accessories (such as a belt or loafers) it is absolutely chic.

A bolder option is to choose a strong piece in leo print, such as a coat or skirt. Refrain shy.

Total black broken by another color

It is the simplest way to "break" black. The easiest color is gray (or dove gray): a soft contrast is obtained, practically within the same chromatic scale.

But black can also be pleasantly combined with light and powdery colors such as powder pink, in fact, or sugar paper. I prefer combinations with light but dusty colors over pastel ones (more baby), but mine is just a personal preference.

Matching black with a strong color also works: blue (yes, black and blue can be done), red, orange, bright pink ... in the end any colored detail adds spice to black, but remember De Gregori's warning: take care of one color only!

Black and military green

The combination of black with military green, but also with olive green and khaki deserves a chapter of its own. Amazing combination. If you are casual type, get yourself a nice parka: you will never tire of it (and it also looks good on elegant outfits!).

Black and denim

A great classic, no explanations are needed. The shirt or the denim jacket over the black trousers, the flared jeans… Surely one of the combinations most in my strings.

All black everything: only black

What if we don't want to break black with nothing but black? No problem.

  • You can focus your attention on a particular and / or accessory, such as belts with an important buckle (eg the gaucho belt, with single or double buckle).

  • You can play with different materials or textures. For example. black skin. The biker jacket and the leather pants are timeless:

  • Or create tone-on-tone contrasts with soft, fluffy, sheer or lace fabrics.

  • You can opt for men's and tailored cuts. I love soft pants paired with a blouse.

  • Finally, let's not forget the power of the little black dress. But also of the maxi black dress. A black dress is forever.
